When people as diverse as John Howard, Sally McManus, Cassandra Goldie, Jennifer Westacott & Richard Di Natale all agree, it's time to raise the dole. If you can barely afford food and accommodation, how are you supposed to look presentable or ensure you get to a job interview on time..?
Furthermore, anyone who knows anyone living on a low income is aware that - whether it's Newstart or minimum wage - you can't save money, so every cent they receive goes back into the economy. Thus, an increase to welfare payments will give a boost to quality of life, a boost to the prospects of those on welfare AND a boost to the economy.
Given the government wants to throw billions of dollars at big businesses who often don't pay tax, I think we should flip that policy on it's head.
